Memory Is Not Optional
Something happens when a people lose access to their own story. It does not happen all at once. It begins quietly. A photograph with no caption. A name no one remembers how to pronounce. A song that the grandchildren cannot translate. Small losses that seem, individually, survivable. They are not. Swaida Memory is not sentiment. It is structure. It is the material from which identity is built, the way stone is the material from which a city is built. Remove enough of it and w

This Is Not Ash
This is not the aftermath of a fire. This ash is what remains of our homes and of our lives. It holds the traces of those we loved. The ones we longed for. The ones we lost. Until even what remained of them burned too. Their belongings.Their small details. The pieces that once looked like us, that felt like our lives. This ash is our story. Our memory. And now even memory has turned to ash. And still, we struggle, deeply and painfully, not to become like the killers. Not to r

Art, Memory, and Resilience
Across cultures and throughout history, art has helped communities process hardship, preserve identity, and rebuild connection. Today, research is increasingly confirming what many societies have long understood intuitively: engagement with the arts strengthens emotional resilience and social cohesion. Cultural participation, whether through music, visual arts, or storytelling, can reduce stress, support mental well-being, and strengthen the bonds that sustain communities dur
